I ...OMG I feel you on the bigness of a field thing! I could ride Luna in a roundpen no problem- I mean, where's she gonna go? But in the BIG arena at the ranch, sorry, too much real estate! I actually did ride her in there under supervision with my trainer and then during a clinic/event last summer and it was fine, but this was after 30 days with the trainer and she was in a good saddle horse mode. However, the day before we sold her last weekend, my trainer had an awesome ride on her in the big arena. I knew that I had to get on and ride her because I was going to be showing her to prospective buyers the next day. We did all the basics then we trotted. Then she spooked sideways big time and nothing, which unsettled me but my trainer walked me through it (thank God for trainers!) then we loped! WE LOPED IN THE BIG ARENA! I hadn't been on that mare since January (and that was while attached to a lounge line) and before that, early September. And she is a 5 year old green horse. My trainer was shouting- breath, breath! the whole time, LOL. Anyway, I ended on that happy note because it was success building for sure. Like you said, if we just ride in our comfort zone, we'll never challenge ourselves and become better. We just need to do what our gut tells us is safe. Sometimes, NOT getting on is the best decision. The day before that awesome ride on Luna my trainer had a bad day with her- she was super fresh, away from My Boy, and she was FULL of it Kentucky Derby style. After much groundwork, she got on, but she only walked and trotted. She just didn't need to do anything more with her considering her mindset. In the end, the next day, I pulled a completely different, relaxed, respectful horse out of the corral. It was such a relief to know that sometimes a random day or frame of mind is just that- it's not who they are. We all have days like that! ;-)Ranch Girl Diarieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09592780075479316574noreply@blogger.com
