Ads From The "Old'n Days"

I am still in Hawaii (more on that when I get home) but just had to share this forward I received today... I wonder what the future generations will think of our ads when they look back in time!


Well...the poem does say...

"The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!"



Ah-ha! That's where I went wrong! I cried too hard. *smacks forehead with palm* And it specifically says to only cry "a little"... I never get the directions right.

True story... my sister packs a few dozen bottles of vitamins with her whenever she travels. Her purse looks like a health food store and she has been known on occasion to utter the words, "Oooh! It's time for my vitamin B-12" I like to tease her about this. She doesnt think it's funny. I probably wont think it's so funny when in a dozen years or so she looks so amazing I get mistaken for her mother.


That guy is a cheater. I can tell. It's in the eyes.

And this lady... she's totally in to spanking. It's in the eyes.
Well if "The Soda Pop Board of America" says so...

Anyone ever heard Dennis Leary's skit on smoking? I love when he impersonates the guy with the voice box arguing with the guy at the drive-thru speaker.
And last but not least....
My personal favorite....

For the unadulterated glory of subliminal advertising.

  1. I'm a marketing major, and I'm saying, marketing companies had it EASY back in the day. All they had to do was come out and say what they meant, and people bought it.

    Now companies have to be much more sneaky, because if they had the gall to come out and say "Feed your kid soda as a baby so they won't be awkward pre-teens" you know there would be some consumer rights group shutting them down. And rightfully so.

    The down side of that is now marketing companies are way more sneaky about getting the same message across.

  3. omgosh those ads freaked me out. i used to love freaking myself out by going to the old magazine section at the UW library and looking at ads from the 50s.

    this post reminds me of the movie "crazy people" with darrel hannah. have you seen it? i love that film!

  5. And somewhere, I still have a little Budweiser can that came filled with candy. The label said, 'Wild, but-weiser'.

    I will also forever remember the perfume commercial with the song..."She can bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan...." That one was pretty racy even for the 70's.

    Hope you are having fun! (Well, duh...she's in HAWAII, it would be ridiculous to think THAT wouldn't be fun)<<< That's the thought that just went through my head-LOL
